Can I use SMH-10 intercom function with ipod or do I need to use a smart phone?

I am considering buying 2 pak and want to know if the intercom transmits from the smh-10 or if it needs a smart phone to transmit.  My girlfriend has an Ipod but not a smart phone.

  The SMH10 does not need a smart phone for intercom communication as that is done through the headsets.

  What I found is you pair the ipod up just like a phone.  It took me a while to get that figured out.
