Using SR10 with Laser Jammer on motorcycle - power issues
I'm working on installing my ALP Quad with StiR integration on my CBR1000RR and I'm scratching my head here because I'm having a strange issue with the power supply. I'll start by explaining what I'm trying to do. I've got the ALP Quad with the StiR antenna and a SENA SR10 Bluetooth transmitter, along with a SENA SMH-10R helmet Bluetooth system. The ALP unit I bought is the "moto" version, which has a remote power button along with a 3.5mm audio out jack. Ideally, the ALP would push alerts via a 3.5mm audio cable to the SR10 Bluetooth transmitter, which would then relay them to my helmet speakers. I soldered and shrinkwrapped all of my connections for power on the bike and used a relay to avoid the risk of forgetting the system on and draining my battery. As you can see in the attached diagram, I used my running lights to actuate the relay and ran the other side directly from the battery. The top part of the diagram is just the "switch" side of the relay, the bottom is the actual power to my devices. I plugged everything in to the bike and turned the key on and the SR10 powered up, but the ALP seemed like it was dead! I shut the SR10 off and the ALP would power on without issue. I tried various combinations and no matter what I tried, I couldn't get the ALP to power on at the same time as the SR10. With the SR10 off/disconnected, there were no issues with the ALP. I started to question the integrity of some of my soldered connections (my soldering skills are far from pro), so I cut some of my wiring to try getting power from different spots, etc. The really strange part that has me confused is that I cut the positive and negative connections to the ALP and the ALP powered on WITH the SR10 when I had only the positive wire to the ALP connected (negative was completely disconnected). Does this make sense to anyone? I'm not sure if it's an issue with the SR10, the laser jammer, or both...

Hi Gordon,
Do you have the 3.5mm audio cable plugged in all this time? If so, you may need to get a ground loop isolator for your 3.5mm cable. You're running in to a ground loop if both the ALP and SR10 are powered by the bike and you run a cable between the two. And the ALP is sensitive to ground loop.

Thank you very much for the reply! Yes I was planning on leaving both devices connected all the time. I just ordered a ground loop isolator, I'll post back when it arrives tomorrow.

So I tried an in-line ground loop isolator on the audio cable and it did solve my power issues, but it seems that the ground loop isolator has decreased the volume so much that now, even on the ALP's highest volume setting, it isn't loud enough to activate the pickup on the SR10. The volume on the ALP was quite loud without the isolator so I don't feel like the ALP volume is the issue. Any ideas?
