Sena SRL2 speaker upgrade and compensation to existing customers
Hello,
First, I'd like to say that I was initially thrilled with the ease of installation with my new Shoei GT Air 2 helmet (which I love.) Sleek design and I love the integration so that a bid unit isn't sticking out.
Second, I really like the clarity when using the phone as everyone I called was quite surprised that I was on my motorcycle when I was speaking with them. I also liked the same clarity when speaking with my girlfriend as a passenger (I installed one in her helmet as well) and setting up the link was effortless.
However, I then went for a ride and tested out the music, both with radio and Bluetooth on my iPhone apps - it was horrible. No bass, very tinny to the point it started to give me a headache. I tried updating the firmware, boosting volume and base on my phone and nothing helped.
I was so disappointed, especially because my initial research had pointed me in the direction of the Cardo packtalk because it used JBL speakers and the reviews were so good, but I wanted the integration with my helmets and assumed that it would be close with the Sena system as it was actually more money for me to purchase the SLR2's.
I contacted customer service and they informed me that they are aware of the problem and that the team is hoping they will work on an upgrade soon, but also indicated that it would be in the form of a new unit. This would mean purchasing two brand new units rather than simply upgrading the speaker on the existing unit.
This concerns me because this would mean another $750 investment and the two units I currently have of no use to me. I suggested that a credit and/or trade-in should be considered for customers who own the current model as both an incentive and compensation for this model which is known by Sena to be inferior in sound quality.
I was told that writing this post would be beneficial in helping the Sena team become more aware of the problem with this unit and assist in evolving this unit. I hope some sort of compensation will be considered so that your current customers will be acknowledged for their loyalty and not put in the awkward position of having to go to a better-sounding system.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

Ive read the comments on this page after a recent ride, noticing yet again that the speakers in my Shoei Neotec helmet are really sub par. I had a really nice pair of KOSS KSC75 earclip headphones speakers that I had purchased for my Quest 3 VR headset. They dramatically improved the sound of the VR headset. After checking out the speakers would indeed work in the Sena system, (they are in fact 60 ohm speakers), I set to and removed the earclips from the KOSS speakers, cut and tinned the wires, and removed the clip in speakers from my helmet, doing the same. Soldered them carefully together each side, being careful to keep the integrity of the microphone connector (just undo the 4 Philips head screws on the back of the clip in speakers and you can sort that easily…). A bit of Velcro to support the speakers in situ in the helmet, carefully tape up the soldering job, re route the wiring, connect the microphone and PRESTO!! I have improved the bass response and volume immensely and they sound fantastic!! The headphones here on Australia cost around $40 a pair and are well worth the upgrade. Thanks so much for giving me the confidence to upgrade this system from what I have read here. Awesome!!

I was about to throw mine in the bin as they're so shockingly bad, then I read the above comment from Simon Bowen. I thought it's worth a go before I bin them, so I ordered the same KOSS headphones and proceeded to fit them in the same way Simon did, and wow! what an improveement! The volume is now so much louder and clearer and the bass is significantly improved. I'm so glad I tried this before I binned them. Thanks Simon for sharing.
I'm still never going to buy another Sena system again though........ ;-)

Just upgraded my SRL2 to SRL-Mesh and I must give Sena some credit - they did a great job fixing most of annoying issues of this built-ins family. Volume range is now enough even for stock harman-kardon speakers to be audible at high speeds. Also EQ and separate volume controls in the app helps a lot - now it is possible to set volume levels separately for intercom and music - and I'm not sure why it cannot be backported to SRL2 firmware 🤷♂️

Well if that has helped one person I’m pleased with that! I have to admit I was surprised when I did it. It makes a massive difference and well worth the mucking around to do the job. Good work Adrian!

I went from the srl2 to the srl mesh. I cant say I noticed enough of an improvement. I would say the sound is comparable to one of those super old grey boom boxes with an antenna that you could run off batteries.
Tinny sounding, calls are difficult to hear at 55mph or more. If someone changes how loud they are talking mid sentence it's deafening.
Looking at a packtalk pro for my new helmet. There's also a bracket for the packtalk to mount to a GT Air 2 but it's definitely not as slick as an integrated.
