Actually this would be a good alternative to the suggestion I just submitted. Whatever approach is used, count me in as another interested customer.

3. Turn off the main, blinking LED during normal operation

I think the best compromise is to use always-on LEDs during normal operation and not blinking LEDs. Always-on LEDs are not distracting, even when blue.
