Connecting the 50S or 30K with a Phone, GPS and non-MESH Bluetooth headsets

The 50 Series, 30K, and Momentum EVO are equipped with the latest Mesh 2.0 technology. Mesh 2.0 is a robust new way of talking over the intercom with your friends. Unlike regular Bluetooth intercom technology, Mesh technology has its own Mesh Bluetooth chip and an algorithm that allows for a significant performance upgrade than Bluetooth intercom. The good news is that now, non-Sena headsets that would like to enjoy the power of Mesh technology can use the +Mesh adapter to connect to the Mesh intercom with other Mesh-capable devices. The Mesh Bluetooth chip also allows for a seamless experience when it comes to the headset multitasking with other devices like a phone and/or GPS while talking over the Mesh intercom. 

 

The 50 Series, 30K, and Momentum EVO connect with non-Mesh Sena headsets through Bluetooth intercom using a single Bluetooth chip. The single Bluetooth chip allows for a conversation between up to four riders. For users upgrading from headsets like the 20 series (the highest performing headsets when it comes to the legacy Bluetooth intercom technology), it can seem like a downgrade. The reason why is because the 20S was Sena’s first dual Bluetooth chip headset. When it comes to Bluetooth intercom, the 20 Series (and other dual Bluetooth chip headsets) are able to communicate between up to eight headsets and allow for a more natural multitasking experience than the 50 Series, 30K, and Momentum EVO. 

 

Compared to the 20S, the 50 Series, 30K, and Momentum EVO have some challenges when trying to connect to non-mesh headsets and other devices like a phone or a GPS.

 

Take a look at this first scenario:

As you can see, Rider one is connected to a GPS and two other riders via One-Way Intercom using channels 1 and 2. 

 

When it comes to the 50 Series, 30K and Momentum EVO, due to the single Bluetooth chip limitations, Rider 1 will temporarily lose connection with the GPS and phone when connected to three riders via a Multi-Way connection. This happens due to a capacity limitation on the single Bluetooth chip. 

 

Let's look at this second scenario before we look at suggested solutions:

As you can see, Rider 1 is connected to a phone, a GPS, and one rider (Rider 2). Rider 1 is also indirectly connected to Rider 3 because Rider 2 acts as a bridge between the two. 

 

In the case above, Rider 1 will be able to partially experience the benefits of Audio Multitasking (listen to music from the phone, instructions from the GPS, and an intercom from Rider 2 and Rider 3) but it will come at the cost of quality. Some of the problems you would experience could be:

  • Poor or deteriorating sound quality
  • Random disconnections. 

This is the case because of the single Bluetooth chip and its bandwidth limitation. 

 

Solutions

If you're a 50 Series, 30K, and Momentum EVO user and you still want to be able to hear music/phone calls from a phone and directions from a GPS, here are the two options: 

 

  1. Use your Smartphone as your source of GPS

If you or your rider friends want to avoid any further investment in new equipment, we suggest you use your smartphone as your source of music and GPS. This way, your headset will only need to handle two functions when operating (Bluetooth intercom connection with other headsets, and media connection with the phone). 

 

  1. Non-Mesh users upgrade to a Mesh device or acquire a +Mesh device. 

If your non-Mesh friends are willing to invest in new technology, we recommend them either upgrade to a Mesh-enabled device (like the 30 series, 50 series, Momentum Evo, etc) or they can invest in a +Mesh adapter to enable their current headsets with Mesh technology. As mentioned above, the additional Mesh Bluetooth chip allows for much more power when it comes to the quality of intercom connection and the ability for the device to multitask between functions. 

 

In summary, +Mesh technology is the future of intercom but in the meantime, the above solutions are the workarounds to be able to continue to connect with legacy Bluetooth technology and have the best experience with your connections.
