Adjustable Microphone Transmit Audio Level Setting on the Ver 2 SMH-10. Ver 1 was perfect!
I as others use the SHM-10 to communicate with two-way radio devices as well as my Iphone 4G. Most of the people I ride with have the Ver 1 unit, so they are lucky. They opted not to upgrade like I did.. However now that I did I am in this dilemma.
Since I have moved to the Ver 2 SMH-10, the audio is noticeably louder and the noise canceling aspects that was once realized with the Ver 1 SHM-10 has pretty much gone out the door. I realize that the increased microphone audio might have been decided on to reflect some issues with some specific cell phone equipment, but it causes negative impacts to other gear that already have a fair amount of microphone gain to begin with. Actually when I do make calls with the Iphone 4G, I have received complaints from some that they can hear background noise now. It is not as bad as the two-way radio, but it is worth mentioning that with the Ver 1 unit, people never complained, in fact they complimented over and over how good it sounded. Now it is not so good news anymore since I have moved to the Ver 2 unit. All I get is people complaining over and over, and I am at the end of the rope here.
The radio I and others use is the Yaesu FTM-10R / SR with the Bluetooth module. I have turned the microphone audio gain all the way down and still people are telling me that they can hear my motorcycle engine and background noise. In addition, the audio just sounds muffled as a result. I have never had this issue with the Ver 1 SMH-10.
I have tried to move the microphone away from the mouth, and that does help a bit, but it still picks up too much background audio.
I therefore would like to suggest that an option within the SMH-10 manager would allow to add say additional 10 dB of attenuation to help adjust the levels to a more suitable level.
I have been instructed to post this suggestion so that Sena management can gauge the need to add this “feature” or what I would call a fix to something that was broken in the Ver 2 unit.
The bottom line is that if I can’t get this resolved, I will have no other choice but to find another Ver 1 SMH-10 or move onto another product.
I hope that I can get a few of you to reply that have noticed the same thing when you upgraded from the Ver 1 to Ver 2 SMH-10 as I loved the product up until now.
Thanks for your time and consideration.

I currently have 2 Yeasu FTM-10SR radio's for my motorcycle & my wife's and one of them has the optional Yaesu BT BU-1chip. The other one we have recently purchased the SR10 to use with the other radio, but at this time are still waiting for the open ended cord to be released so I can make my own plug to connect to the FTM-10SR. My wife and I are currently very happy Scala Q2 users going on 3 years, but when its time to upgrade we were seriously looking at the Sena SMH10 headsets, but I have heard numerous complaints like this one of the audio being too loud with the SMH-10 v2 on the Ham radio's we use and others. We could find ver 1 SMH10's on the used market, but then that would keep us from upgrading as new firmware is released and I've been pretty impressed with Sena's updates along the way. I have been following Lu Venci closely on the FTM-10R / SR threads as he has the setup I want to go to, but at this time I'm holding off until the issues he is having are resolved. Please do address this issue and allow the sound to be returned to where the V1 was if so desired by the user for devices that have enough amplification in them already.

Hello friend
I have a Yeasu FTM-10r ham radio with Bluetooth. I was looking for a headset for my motorcycle. I was looking at the Scala Rider G4. My friend suggested that I get the sena SMH-10
instead of the scala rider g4 . well the Sena ver2 play's very hot and about to go out of the band pass. out of frequency. I have a Yeasu Bluetooth headset BH-2a and it plays great , not hot at all.
Please give us a way to adjust the Mic output . So I can use my headset I can't afford to through away $200.00 Dollars .
At this point I am sorry I didn't got the Scala rider G4.

Thank you for your feedbacks. We will try to find out the way how to resolve the case in the next firmware release. Will get back to you when ready. Also, the DIY cable is coming in mid January.

I might add that for those using the SR10, you will find some relief with the latest firmware I just loaded.. I will test tonight, but at least there is that option to turn down or up the radio TX audio level.
This will help those ONLY with the SR-10.

Dear Sena,
Any word on when we might expect the next release that will contain the selectable mic audio gain? Thanks

Dan, Any update on this fix?

Well there is a firmware update for the SMH-10-B from firmware 3.2 to 3.3 dated December 2011 however it still has no fix for the over hot microphone.
An adjustment for the mic gain is what we asked for. I guess the management from Sena do not take us seriously.
Please Fix this problem . Or should we tell the motorcycle clubs and Motorcycle magazines of this problem with the product .

Adjustable mic gain would be a great improvement. Sometimes it difficult to hear my wife with via the intercom connection due to her speaking softly. If I could increase the intercom mic gain on her SMH10, there would be no issue.

Thank you for your suggestion. We will investigate the background noise to the caller when using SR10. The reasons of occurring the kind of noise are rather complicated that it is difficult to say that lowering mic gain would be the proper solution. We will let you clarified soon why the problems are being occurred. And we expect it will be improved in the next firmware version.

Any word on the "planned" fix in the next release for the adjustable mic gain on the SMH 10? Just a recap, I need lower levels just like the Ver 1 had. It has been since November now since I have brought this up and well my patience is starting to question the progress. An update I believe might be in order now. If the plans have been scrubbed, I need to know that now so I can move forward with another solution. Thanks in advance.

We have performed feasibility test for mic gain configuration; however, the function significantly affects others since it is quite tricky to find an optimal gain applicable to phone and intercom.
It means if you adjust the Intercom mic gain to certain level, then iPhone Siri or voice command may not work. Definitely, we will try to find a solution anyway and it is to be realized in v4.1.
Thank you for your patience.

Dear Sena,
Was there a solution to background noise setting off intercom tx in V4? I am still trying to download 4.1 and my machine stalls at 12%.
