Create a SR10 2 way radio cable for the Yaesu FTM-10R / FTM-10SR

Please look into the feasibility of creating a 2 way radio cable for your SR10 specifically designed for the Yaesu FTM-10 series of ham radio.  This includes the FTM-10R and the FTM-10SR ham radios.  The VX-8 hand held also uses this same connection plug.  The Yaesu FTM-10 ham radio was specifically aimed at motorcycle riders with its waterproof face plate and on the FTM-10SR version also has a waterproof / dust proof base.  Its a pretty popular radio among the motorcycle ham radio riders so makes it a good target radio to to connect to the SR10.  The headset connection used on this ham radio is of course a proprietary 7 pin waterproof connection plug. 

I'm still waiting for the DIY plug from the SR10 so I can create my own plug for my Yaesu FTM-10SR, but even then, I'll be about $50 in between purchasing the Yaesu CT-M11 for their open ended plug and the Sena SR10 open ended plug and still have to connect them together.  If you guys came up with a plug already built for this radio, it should be cheaper and take the risk out of the customer screwing up the connection.

  DIY cable is on its way. Sena is supposed to add this for sure. As for FTM-10R/10SR, we will study the possibility to support it. Thanks for your feedback.

  I would also like to see a Yaesu cable that works with my VX-7r.  It's connection plug is also identical to the FTM-10 series and VX-8.  I had to chop off a lot of excess plastic on the SENA brand Yaesu cable to get it to fit right.  It's not very pretty, but at least it works now.

  I bought a sena sr10 to connect a yaesu FTM-10R and to share music with my gf. To my despair, my ham radio isn't supported and the day after I bought it, sena announced a new device that would share sound in stereo... Please make this cable and add the possibility to share every sound that comes out of the SR10 to any and all SMH10

  Kim, I'm not sure that the SR10 will ever meet those requirements of sharing audio to two headsets at the same time, and especially music.  And unless its just a firmware update, I'm thinking it won't be possible to update the SR10 to support Stereo A2DP.  I do hope they at least come out with a cable for the FTM-10R though.  That SM10 looks like it will be great though to share music between a rider and passenger when there is no 2 way radio requirement like the SR10 supports.

  Dan,

  Yeah I read about this problem regarding A2DP vs Mono, what I'm saying is that I wish they could just mix everything in one "feed", and permit two or more connections to the sr10 from different smh-10 in order to share any sound that comes out of there; be it music (in mono), gps, radio... And of course, I wish they'd make a cable for the Yaesu FTM-10R.

  For those of you with Yaesu "SUBMERSIBLE" radios (VX-6R, VX-7R, VX-8R, etc.) Get a Ct-10 mic cable from your favorite Yaesu vendor and an ICOM cable from Sena and you're done. It works perfectly.

  I had a friend who's great with solder assemble a cable for my FTM10SR and it looks and works great. At his request I will not share his contact info but it can be done. He just had to cannibalize a SR10 cable (doesn't matter which one.) and connect it to a Yaesu MEK-M10 mic connector with a CT-M11 Connection Cable.

  Is there a PTT button (remote) available from Sena? Or have others just made their own up ? I for one like having a PTT mounted on the handle bars and would be very interested if there is one available.

  The SR10 comes with a decent PTT switch that attaches near your hand grip. I prefer a semi-permanently mounted switch and have installed an Air Rider PTT switch (http://www.airrider.com/product_p/03-04-58.htm) between my left grip and the switch gear unit on my V-Strom. It works like a charm.

  Yes, Refplusten.

   I have two VX-6Rs and have used the CT-91 to connect to the more common ICOM connectors on my old Motocomm and Autocom systems. It works great with the SR-10 as well. It's super easy to set up and maintains the "Submersible" feature of the VX-6R

  Can anyone say that they have actually got their FTM10R to work via this new lead with their Sena headset ? I'm using Autocom just now, but very tempted to make the switch... but continuing to use my Yaesu radio would be a decider for me. Additionally, and comments and or suggestions would be welcome too.   Gareth, Yes I have and I know others that have. Just know that the SR10 is NOT stereo. If that does not matter than you will be very pleased with how it works with the Yaesu. I did an extra mod though where I added a capacitor in the Mic TX line to offer higher frequency response as the Yaesu radio tends to have lower frequency response. Combined with the excellent noise reduction the Sena SMH-10 offers, if can sound just a tad on the muddy side depending on your voice. So if you experiment and add a small value cap (start with like .05 uf) and go down in value as needed to get to the sweet spot that will help out a lot. Just note if you go too low, the audio level may be too low even after you boost your Yaesu microphone level up. Remember, you have 4 settings. Min, Low, Mid, High. Also if you are using the latest firmware in the VER 2 SMH-10, you may find the removing the microphone boost (uncheck) will make a difference as well. Just play around and use another radio or person to provide feedback.

  Remember to speak into the mic when setting levels. Don't be concerned about it sounding too low. Once you get on the road and speed, you tend to speak louder and everyone will tell you "I can't even tell you are riding" Enjoy!

  I was however going to ask, but other than the FTM10R, the SMH10 and the SR10 plus the connecting leads (CT-M11 ), what other leads or items might i require ? And is the connection between the two simple? Or is there a connections diagram anywhere ?

  Gareth, the SMH-5 & the SMH-10 both work fine with the SR10.  I actually rode with 2 fellow ham riders this weekend who both have the SMH-5's along with SR10's hooked up to their HT ham radio's on their respective motorcycles.  Their communication over the ham radio's sounded great.

  The pinout for the FTM10 mentions that you connect the Yaesu FTM10 pin 4 and 5 to GND with resistors in between.

  The pinout for the SR10 only mentions the PTT pin.

  Can I therefore assume I need to connect the SR10 PTT pin to two resistors, and each resistor to FTM10 pin 4 or 5? And within the SR10, the PTT pin is connected to GND when I push the PTT button?

  Quick update of myself: the PTT lead on the SR10 cable does close a circuit to GND, so connecting should be as simple as connecting two resistors in parallel to the SR10 cable GND lead, and connecting each resistor to the pin 4 and 5 SW leads of the FTM10 cable. Both leads run +5V when the FTM10 is on, so I presume the FTM10 will detect when there is a circuit and open PTT on the radio side.

  You need a PTT button connected to the SR10; the PTT button on the FTM10 front will only open the microphone in the front display, and likewise the handheld PTT will only open the microphone in the handheld controller.

  One thing to point out as an improvement to the TX audio, it to put in series a .001 uF capacitor (may have to play with this value to obtain the desired sound)

  Reason is that the Yasue has TX audio characteristics that tend to make it sound a little bit more muddy. By placing the cap in series, you will enhance the high frequency audio that makes the Sena sound great on the Yaesu. This is a feature I requested but has not yet been implemented where the Sena should have the option to select "premphazied audio" on the output.
