new firmware for HJC smart 50B (Sena 50r)
Good afternoon everyone. I was trying to update HJC Smart 50B which is Sena 50R. But it didn't work out for me. Meanwhile, for Sena 50R the firmware number is already 2.4, while for HJC Smart 50B it remains 1.0. When will the latest firmware for HJC Smart 50B be available?

Unfortunaly that is also what I expect. This story has been such a disappointment so part, I wouldn't be surprised by a new dissapointment. But let's give them the benefit of doubt, for now.

I also wrote to Sena support - same question on fw update. Same story, i.e. redirection to HJC customer service, from there back to Sena.....
The response from HJC was that the new fw. Sena is preparing. Sena replied that the current fw. does not contain any bugs (not true) and therefore they are not preparing anything else.
Quite a strange approach by a branded manufacturer and its support.

I find that very hard to believe being as the 50b based on the Sena 50r which has been updated quite a few times.
Why don't they just redo the latest 50r firmware for the 50b
Both companies are really starting to p!$$ me off now

I have the impression that it looks like this. Sena wants money from HJC for the update, HJC does not want to pay because when buying a product Sena should provide support. The customer loses in the conflict between two companies. It is terrible. And the 50B software is very unfinished

Have translated the above for you
Received the following message from HJC today:
We are pleased to confirm that Sena will release a major firmware update to Mesh 3.0 for HJC in 2024.
In addition, we actively encourage Sena to provide regular firmware updates to ensure better support for our customers.

Fingers crossed then that they are finally going to release an update.
Just hope it's for the 50b and not the newer modelsThe in 2024 bit is ambiguous though could be end of December 2024
We need it now for summer riding season0 -
I think so too
Keep the fingers crossed for us...

If they only do a update to Mesh 3.0 and leave the rest of the issues untouched in the new firmware I will claim a refund for both my 50B set AND helmet, no matter how much effort it will take. The CARDO set in my other helmet costs half and works a lot better than the 50B v1.0.

I emailed again and asked for an update

Going to ask how the update is. If they wait any longer season 2024 is finished

Just had another update from HJC.
Hello,
The update will cover all the range of smart HJC.
Apart mesh 3.0 no other updates are planned.
Kind regards,
Cordialement,
Not what I was hoping for as I have other issues with my unit.
The radio reception is poor
I get a repeating beep now and again which I have to power down and restart to get rid of.Disappointed to say the least.

Ok,
We know the 50 series (OEM or not) are functionally identical, appart from minor FW changes
From what I know about software development, Sena will use the same Base firmware for all updates, which means all the bugfixes the 50S/R got, will be ported to the 50B in the Mesh 3.0 update due to that.
But if there's any major bugs in the 50B after that, we'll be out of luck for more.

Fingers crossed
That did cross my mind that they might incorporate the old fixes
But if it means more rewrite I doubt sena will do it for free.0 -
Disappointed too - about HJC and Sena
That's not the right way to deal with customers - from both companies :-(

Hello,
I know that this is a different topic, but maybe someone can help me here. I have the HJC Smart 50B and have problems with noise and crackling. This is especially noticeable when I am not listening to music or no one is talking. Do you also have problems with this? Does anyone have a solution to this problem or is this normal?
Thank you in advance for an answer.
Best regards
1 -
Not a different topic at all
Quite valid I would say
HJC are Claiming no issues with the 50b
I think the radio reception is poor and universal intercom range is pitiful.
But to answer your question
No I don't really get noise as such
Sometimes the odd slight hiss but that's just power to the speakers I'd say.
Definitely not something that bothers me
Sounds like you may have a fault
Speak to the supplying dealer if its still under warranty about a replacement
But I'd definitely email hjc too to see what they say0 -
Thank you for your answer. I forgot to mention that. This is actually my second device, which I bought from a different dealer. I have already contacted Sena and HJC. HJC referred me to Sena. Sena gave me some suggestions for solutions, but unfortunately they didn't help me. That's why I thought it might be a setting issue, because the second device has exactly the same problem.

@Tobiaswiedemann Do you have this problem also when intercom is off? On my last tour all of us had this problem using Mesh Intercom, and they blamed me as I was the only one using the HJC 50b, all others were using real Sena 50 series. Tuning the "Intercom-Audio Overlay Sensitivity" setting in all members in our group finally seemed to resolve this. However, all members still complained about my bad intercom audio, so there must be an issue with the HJC 50b....

The noise starts as soon as I turn on the system. I was able to minimize it by reducing the individual volume settings in the app. At high speeds, however, you can probably forget about this because you can't hear anything anymore. The cracking, which occurs every now and then, occurs especially when I start the music or pause it for a few seconds. Very strange...

I also have this problem also with the Mesh enabled. Without Mesh (and I ride mostly without because mesh doesn't work very well on the 50b), the sound, at least for music, seems fine. There are lots of other problems, though. I don't use the radio at all because of lousy reception, I cannot pair to my buddies Cardo, not even with Bluetooth, the navigation sound is bad if paired to both my phone for music and an external navigation set and voice commands are seldomly recognized. I only use my 50b for listening to music and making sporadic phone calls, and that works fine for me.
Furthermore, I have read a few release notes from Sena's own 50R, in which most of these problems are addressed and fixed with updated firmware. So come on, Sena. Do it!
Somehow I keep grabbing that other helmet equipped with a 100 Euros less expensive Cardo Spirit HD which works absolutely great.

According to HJC, the HJC Smart 50B is identical to the 50R. So I don't understand why you can't just load the firmware from the 50R onto the 50B.

Because Sena will want hjc to pay for the updates.
Fingers crossed the promised update will make it the same as 50R as it'll be an easy quick update for sena to provide if they're the same0 -
Hi All,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns. I completely understand how frustrating it can be when you're eager for firmware updates, especially when you're aware of issues that need to be addressed.
As an OEM, we manufacture devices based on the specific requirements provided by HJC. When it comes to firmware updates, the process is a bit more complex than we might all prefer. We can't independently push updates or fixes because every change needs to be approved by HJC first, which ensures that any modifications align with their overall product strategy and specifications. If we were to bypass this process and make changes on our own, those updates would likely be rejected, which ultimately wouldn’t benefit anyone.
I truly wish there were a faster or more straightforward solution, but in this case, we're bound by the structure of our partnership with HJC. The best approach right now is to keep voicing your concerns directly to HJC's support team. However, I'm more than willing to compile any non-hardware-related update suggestions you have and pass them along as feedback. While I can’t guarantee immediate changes, I will do my best to advocate on your behalf.
Thanks for your understanding and patience. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we’re committed to doing everything within our power to support you.

Hello Alex. Thank you for this post and we all realise your difficulties. But with all due respect, that should not be your customers problem.
1 -
Thank you for your response Alex, very much appreciated and understand Sena's position.
Many of us here have already contacted HJC multiple times and keep getting told either no planned updates or the latest message is there will be an update by the end of 2024.
Are you aware of this update being created your end ?
Or are we being fobbed off by HJC again.
I can see how you are a manufacturer on HJC behalf and will obviously support the product if when HJC ask for it.
It just feels like they've moved on again now with new models as the 50b is no longer listed.
Selling a premium product and then not arranging updates for their customers is a shocking business model, and as like others have said too, if this is the case we'll move to another manufacturer next time.
HJC will lose helmet business AND intercoms too but sadly Sena will also lose customers because of the connection, as from a customer point of view we are the ones losing out here.
This is my 2nd sena based unit and my Nexx xcom 2 unit also 3rd party and made by sena worked great with issues fixed by firmeare updates a few times.
Sadly HJC obviously don't care about their customers which in turn will sadly hurt Sena too.0 -
To he honest — Smart HJC headset is the worst creation that I ever used. I have three different models. From first ones to 50B in RPHA 31. HJC helmets are best in price-quality range. I have three HJC helmets and planning to buy carbon RPHA 91. Headset preparation is great. But in this case we don't have choice — it's gonna be stupid to install Cardo or something else. Please consider doing your job good. For now it looks like you just got money for contract. Nothing else. "Thank you", Sena.

Hi all,
I contacted Sena again about the availability of updated firmware for the Smart HJC 50B and this is the answer I finally received:
Hello Marc,
Good day!
After sending your case to the upper management for requesting of the updated firmware version for HJC Smart 50B.
The development team informed us that HJC has reached out to Sena to release a new firmware version for the HJC 50B and it is currently in the testing phase.
Thank you,Alex

Hi.
I have 2 HJC RPHA 91 and 2 50B, one mine, and one wife's.
The same issues exist in both.
Very weak FM radio sound.
And when FM radio is on, navigation directions from the phone is not coming.
I have to say, I never had these problems with no Cardo devices.
Just hoping these two problems will be resolved with the new firmware.Actually, months ago I wrote to HJC support about the problems and requested a firmware update.
I told them, in such 'premium' device with a premium price, these are unacceptable, and I indicated that only a new firmware will fix these.
I don't think that's a hardware design flaw.

I have the same problem. I have a HJC Smart 50B, during 11 days of vacation in a group of 3 other friends (all equipped with the original Sena 50 R) they all complained about the very poor and weak sound quality from my HJC Smart50 B. I tried different combinations of settings using the app, but with no positive result.

Hey guys, this is all on HJC! When a company contracts out a job like having Sena build them a comm unit. The contract states support, firmware updates, etc.
HJC most likely was too cheap to have Sena provide regular updates. For example, Schubert has the SC2 unit which is a 50R/50S, and it has the same firmware support the Sena devices has and it on the same version of firmware the Sena devices have.
I have a Schuberth C5 helmet with the SC2, and a RPHA 91 with the Smart HJC 50B. The Schuberth SC2 blows the 50B away. And there is no difference in the SC2 and 50S/50R sound wise as there is with the poorer sounding HJC unit.
I just tore out my HJC Smart 50B out of my RPHA 91 and replaced it with a standalone 50R, night and day.
