SMH5 firmware upgrade - Failed to recognize device. Cannot open USB
My SMH5 has stopped working with my iPhone for Siri commands (press top black button to invoke Siri to make calls etc). The advice was to upgrade my firmware.
So installed Sena software from the SMH5 downloads page. Installation went through and asked me to connect device which I did, and then the Windows hardware wizard popped up to install the drivers. All good so far. Then launched Sena Bluetooth Device Manager and whatever I do it will absolutely refuse to recognise the device.
My understanding that this is due to device drivers not being signed. I cannot disable device security as my PC has policy locked down.
But also, the firmware hasn't changes since 2017, pre iOS 13 (which seems to have introduced the problem).
So Sena support, are you going to fix this issue?

Sena App on IOS13 does not have any fields to make adjustments to the 30K headset and it does not show the firmware my headset is running. Sena customer service is all but non existent. Why can’t I simply get someone to call me back or at least talk to me about it when I have them on the phone. I’ve heard we’ll have someone call you back 3 times now in over a week. This is horrible! I am also having the same problem. I have used Mac OS Catilina (10.15.4) and Windows 10 with all updates. I even have an old windows 7 laptop that won't do it either. I have disabled the driver signing in Win 10 and that did not help.

So, in my case the issue was simple. I was using micro usb cable provided with headset of other manufacturer meant only for charging. When using proper data cable micro usb, the upgrade process went ok

For making such great headsets, your software is garbage.
Who keeps SPECIFIC cable for specific devices. I have gone through about 10 different cables I have and NONE of them are getting me past the device recognition section.
JUST GARBAGE!

I have a 50R and it saying "Cannot open USB". Already tried with disabled driver signature check as proposed here:No idea, anymore?!

Can you check the SMH5 upgrade process to see if there is anything unusual? I have also upgraded it and everything works quite smooth and stable,wordle website, no abnormalities are seen.

Solution: I have found out that you need to connect the SENA to an old computer/laptop.
This somehow has something to do with the compatibility between the computer and the SENA device.
I have updated the SENA SMH5 to v.2.2.3 (date: 4th of April 2024) using the ''Sena Bluetooth Device Manager'' software on an old laptop (DELL Latitude E6410, with operation system: Windows 10 Pro).
All my newer computers / laptops gave the problems as described.

Here what finally I discover with the help of the Sena Support:
Disable Driver Signature - Windows
- Click on Start
- Click on Settings
- Click on Update & Security
- Click on Recovery
- Find where it says “Advanced Startup” and click Restart Now
- The following screen will show up:
Click Troubleshoot
Click Advanced options.
Click Startup Settings - note that this option may be hidden and you may have to click “more options”
Since we are modifying boot time configuration settings, you will need to restart your Computer one last time. The following screen will show up:
Click Restart.
The following screen will show up:
Press the number 7 on your keyboard to Disable driver signature enforcement.
That’s it. Your computer will restart and you’ll be able to fully install the software.
