First, the problem is really at the phone end.  The SMH10 is just a conduit for what you say.  But past that, how wise is it to have a detailed conversation with a smart phone while riding?  Distraction is a problem in a car - it doesn't get better on a bike.  If you have to be /that/ specific with a smart phone, pull over.  Honest.  :-)

I asked a technical question.  I now understand that the phone is the issue, thank you for that.  Just the facts, please.  Didn't ask for an opinion on potential distractions.

I don't recall posting opinions.  I do recall posting comments based on personal experience.  Whether you wish to take advantage of that or not is your choice.

Stanley I agree. Some people just can't help injecting their personal opinions on how one should ride, where one should ride, what one should ride, and what gear to use, and how to utilize the gear they choose. As long as the usage of your cell phone while operating your motorcycle is 'legal', do as you wish. Simply ignore their opinions, and move on. Personally I would never utilize a white full-face helmet, but I certainly would never suggest anyone not to use one if they so choose too.

Thanks.  I will head over to a Droid user forum, since the Droid is my issue not the Sena, but I though I may pick up some advice from riders with similar issues here.  I wish the use of voice commands with the Droid worked better.   I think it is very useful to be able to accept and make phone calls, control a music list, and use navigation by voice command.  So far I've not gotten this to work to my satisfaction.  Other than the issue described in the first post, a much more basic frustration is that my voice command to the Droid, "Play - name of song list", is not recognized by the Droid unless the motorcycle is almost or completely at a stand still.  Even coasting slowly with very little engine/wind noise, the Droid responds "did you say -send message to? or did you say - call xxx".  Any suggestions on a good droid technical site?

    There is http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-incredible-2/

But that's just my opinion; obviously some people are too full of themselves to even listen to someone else's opinion.

You're welcome Stanley. I've been a SMH10 / Droid user for several years. The voice commands for the most part work fairly well, but not prefect. Be sure and run the adapt voice app on the Droid. That seems to help somewhat. Of course as you know, you need to overcome wind noise. Sometimes ducking down behind my windshield helps, but you have probably discover this does not always work either.  Some of the folks on http://advrider.com/forums/ are using the SMH10 and Droids. You may find some valuable info there that helps.

Watch for the move to Ice Cream Sandwich.  Among the goodies in ICS is the ability to train the speech tools.  Training them while wear the SMH-10 does make a difference with a Razr Maxx and SMH-10 in a Schuberth S1 with boom mic.

The speech recognition training  has been around at least since Andriod 2.1. One should ALWAYS train the device exactly how it will be utilized (train while wearing helmet). I have noticed very little difference in speech recognition reliability from Android 2.1 to Android 4.0.

Actually RBEmerson, you first posted "I dont recall posting opinions", then you posted "Thats just my opinion".

Watch what you say in forums; telling someone they are too full of themselves wont grant you any respect from anyone else in the forums

Please quote the exchange accurately. I wrote:

    "There is http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-incredible-2/

But that's just my opinion; obviously some people are too full of themselves to even listen to someone else's opinion."

That was in response to Mr. Pierce's question:

"Any suggestions on a good droid technical site? "

The ending clause was, I admit, not necessary.

It seems like Android system limits Voice Command feature when use with a headset. You will notice that it will now perform search command either. This was observed in Android OS version 2.x.x.

I find no problem with using the droid voice system using my SMH10 with my Galaxy S3. However, i know what you mean about how you can only open navigation by voice (open navigation) but then you can't give voice instructions on the address... Well, i've found a way around this. Just tell the phone what and where you want to go all in one go... For example . I press my phone button on the SMH10 and then say "navigate to 2446 West Any Road, This Town ETC". And it finds searches for it automatically. If it's can't find it or has any questions back for you, it still uses the SMH10 to get you to reply.

    Hope that helps.

PS: I'l play it safe and not post any opinions... ;-) lol.

Hi I know this doesn't address the issue of giving voice commands for different Android functions but it might help some SMH10 owners. I use the Cyberon Voice Speed Dial app (http://tinyurl.com/Cyberon-speed-dial) to get voice dialing on my SMH10 and Android phone You have to disable the voice search facility (Iinstructions on Google Play page) but as I never use it anyway it's not a problem. I recommend creating the voice tags with the helmet on for better recognition but it works for me Hope that helps ....... somebody Alex

I can give voice commands to my phone, such as "navigate home" through my smh-10. Great, right? NOPE, it never works while riding. It only works while sitting still so I'm guessing its a wind noise issue? People can understand me perfectly clearly when talking on the phone at 70 mph, so why can't my phone understand my commands? Thanks in advance.

    David,

A couple of suggestions. 1. try re positioning the mic if you think it might be wind. 2. talk a little louder.

When you give the command while riding, does the phone give you feedback?

I can't get it to work with music voice commands.  For example, it allows me to say "Play Music" and it plays my library; however, android allows you to say "Play XXXX" where XXX is the artist, and it plays that artist, or "Listen To XXX" where XXX is the song title.  When I use the Sena, Play Artist or Listen To Song don't work, but when I unpaid the headset and use the android voice commands on their own, they work.

I have tested it with Chatterbox, and although I don't want to switch, that's a feature I sorely miss.

The reason you can't use it while on the freeway is that the phone is listening for the commands using it's onboard mic.  When there's no windnoise, the phone can hear you through your helmet.  Try it sometime.  Pull over, lift your faceshield and hold the phone close to your face and very quietly give an address to navigate to, then try the same thing but with the faceshield closed and the phone in your pocket again speaking quietly.

This is not a problem with the Sena. If you do that on your phone directly, you'll be stuck in the app having to start the voice commands again. That's happening in your pocket. Related to how Android and apps work together, not the headset.

Instead of "opening" stuff, give the phone a complete command such as "navigate to the nearest whatever" and navigation will kick off. If it needs more information, it will prompt you. If you say "send a text message to so-and-so" it will prompt you further for the body and then whether or not to send it.
