I made the experience that my SMH10 (v1) is a power hog while being switched off and I need to load it every three months or so over the cold season while I'm not driving to make sure the battery won't give up. :(

Most li-ion rechargeable batteries lose about 1% of charge per day when in storage. It is a good idea to "exercise" them from time to time and never leave them fully discharged for long periods of time (weeks).

I'm a model airplane pilot and have a bunch of li-ion and li-poly batteries, and they have no problem laying around for a year or so, if they were full and are not connected to anything.

But like I said, I need to load my SMH10s at least once every three months.

There is a great article about Lithium batteries http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

According to the article, LIthium-ion batteries store better long-term if they are discharged to about 40%.  Also, cold storage is better than room-temperature storage.  (Please note that these finding specifically pertain to Lithium-ion batteries, not necessarily other types.)
