I have this exact problem with another Sena product, my Sena Prism Tube: it wouldn't power on when I first opened the package. But I discovered it works and records video when plugged in. Once unplugged it won't turn on even when it was on during being plugged in, in the latter case it'll just turn off instantly once unplugged. I tried turning it off and charging it but I believe it's already charged. The Sena Bluetooth Device Manager software doesn't detect my Prism Tube and gives the same message of not being recognized: "No device recognized" and "failed to recognize device. Cannot open USB" I tried everything list above on this forum for nothing and a few other people said they never resolved their problems. I have a 20S that never gave any such trouble but I bought a Sena Prism camera that had the same problems but wouldn't record when plugged in. I contacted customer service with some questions and got a response weeks later, after I returned it already. I wonder about their products and think it's a shame. I'll have to return yet another Sena camera and buy a Go Pro instead.

smh 5. I cycled the file manager many times more and trying to restore the software even if the sena was off . Eventually he went. Now works

I am using 10D-11. One of the device is not powering up at all. What could be the possible solution ?

I had the same problem with not being able to start unit after unsuccessfully trying to upgrade. I tried a lot of the suggestions in the forum but Aaron Chan had it right. Re-start the device manager with the unit plugged into the computer then push the reset button and begin the download even if the unit isn't on. i pushed the reset button between steps and it started the download even though the unit was not on (only the red charging light was on). once the download was complete, the unit works fine.

I don't understand why everyone is upgrading the software. It's a simple intercom system. Why do you need to upgrade all the time. Seems that it causes more problems anyway.

My issue was a dead battery. The battery was stuffed after 2 years of little use and the fact that as my unit was out of warranty Sena were bloody useless. They won't even sell you a new battery.

I purchased a new battery pack on ebay. Just had to change the connection and it was sweet. Cost me around NZ$30 delivered to my door within a week. So easy

Wouldn't bother with a Sena product again tho as their after service is hopeless. They do not back up their products once it is out of warranty

I had a similar problem. Got a new Sena (factory replacement because I broke off one of the plastic pieces holding the control unit to the mic base). Process was seamless and return was fairly quick.

Got the new unit and went to update firmware, but got a call during the update and didn't follow the prompts in time. Unit appeard DOA (would indicate red light while plugged in as charging, but would not turn on).

Simple fix was to push a thumbtack into the reset switch on the back of the unit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4_ScTHvFJI

Anytime I have issues with the Sena app (I'm using the newest version on my Mac) it's because I didn't follow the process:

    1. Make sure the unit is turned off. Fire up the Sena application on your PC.

    2. Plug the SHM10 into the USB port of your PC.

    3. Turn on the SHM10.

    4. Hit Next. Now it's recognized. If I plug it in already turned on, I have recognition issues every time.

Hope that helps. Pin in the rest button instantly fixed what I thought was DOA issue.

Sena's solution worked for me: "Try plugging the SMH10R, with the battery connected, into your computer and restart the Sena Device Manager. When you get to the Device Recognition section, use a paperclip to press on the reset button that is underneath the circular indentation near the Plus button. Then power on the SMH10R by pressing the Center button and Plus button at the same time. If the SMH10R doesn't power on completely then that is ok.  Press "Next" on the Device Recognition screen and you should be able to update the firmware normally."

3rd time ever trying to turn this smh10 on and nothing. Reset,, hard reset nor the simple turn on sequence has no effect. Literally bought it last November and third time trying to power it up. Do I bother asking for a replacement from sena?
