20S Intercom connection with SMH10 v1.0?
First, I was sure that I submitted this a couple of days ago, but now I can find no record of it, so I apologize if this is a duplicate submission.
I have a 20S unit that I bought to upgrade from the SMH10 Dual set that I purchased years ago. The SMH10 units are v1.0, so they do not have the micro-USB port, and thus no way to upgrade the firmware, as far as I know. I have updated the firmware on the 20S to the latest available.
I have not been able to get a successful Intercom pairing to work between the SMH10 and the 20S. I am only trying to get a simple 2-device pairing to work: One 20S with one SMH10. Is this supported at all?
Sometimes, when I go through the pairing procedure, both units reports success (more often they don't recognize each other at all). But then I can only start the intercom session with one unit (from the SMH10), while the other (the 20S) just reports "Intercom Failed."
But even when the intercom session seems to be started successfully, the SMH10 transmits audio which can be heard with the 20S, but there is no audio transmitted from the 20S to the SMH10.
And, this partial connection only seems to work once. Once the initial connection is closed, I cannot start another Intercom session from either device. Both respond with their respective "Intercom connection failed" notification (two low-beeps on the SMH10, voice on the 20S). Sometimes after powering both units off and on again, they will be able to connect once more.
I have confirmed that all other functionality works with all 3 of the devices (connecting to other bluetooth devices, intercom between the two SMH10 units, etc.)
Is there any way to get this pairing to work properly?
Is there any way at all to update the firmware on the SMH10 v1.0, maybe by opening it up or pushing the update over Bluetooth from a PC? Would updating the firmware make a difference in its ability to connect to the 20S anyway?
If I cannot get this pairing to work, would you offer any discount to me to exchange at least one of my SMH10 v1.0 units with a later version that CAN connect to the 20S?
It's very frustrating that the 20S, which is supposed to be capable of universal Intercom connectivity, cannot connect to another SENA device.
Thanks!

You have to pair using the universal intercom pairing function vs the sena pairing method. Put the 20s into universal pairing mode (check the manual on how to do this). Put your SMH10 into phone pairing mode. They will then pair up. The 20s can connect and disconnect to the SMH10 normally from the intercom button. From the SMH10 you connect and disconnect using the phone button. Works good for my v1.0 sena.

Be patient on the initial pairing up. It sometimes can take 30 seconds or so to make the initial hook-up. Once it does then disconnecting and connecting only takes a second or two from either device

Thanks for the response. I guess I misread the 20S manual, which says to put the other intercom device into hands-free pairing mode when using the Universal pairing function. I had tried that with the SMH10 in intercom pairing mode.
With the SMH10 in hands-free (phone) pairing mode, it did work, and now I can use it as an intercom.
One more question: since the 20S now appears as a phone to the SMH10, is it still possible to also connect the SMH10 to an actual phone, so my passenger could also use it for phone calls? Or if I pair the SMH10 to a phone now, will it "forget" the connection with the 20S?

Unfortunately Dan, I think the 1st gen SMH 10 is pretty basic and doesn't support two phones like the 20s. The best you can expect is what you have. As with all tech, what was once the latest and greatest is superseded by advancements. You can add music to the SMH10 through the input plug on the base unit which is the best way. You might be able to bluetooth the music using headset pairing but I haven't tried that and the manual isn't too clear as to going about it. At least you have intercom!

It's nice to have intercom, but this really means that by "upgrading" one unit to the 20S, I've actually lost functionality that I had before. With 2 SMH10 units, they could connect to each other through intercom and each could also connect to a phone. In fact, I even had one connected to a phone for calling, a GPS for audio and directions, and another SMH10 for intercom. If one unit is a 20S, I can have EITHER intercom or phone with the SMH10, but not both. I am aware of how technological advancements work, but thanks for the lesson, anyway. :-/
Does the later version of the SMH10 allow it to connect to the 20S as an intercom instead of as phone? It will be cheaper for me to upgrade one SMH10 to another than investing in another 20S unit, since I would only need the bare unit itself, so I would like to know if this is an option.

Yes! the firmware upgradable SMH10 will connect to the 20s through normal intercom pairing, leaving the phone pairing separate so you can have intercom with the 20s and pair a separate phone on the SMH10. You can just buy the module and use your existing mount. You would be good to go plus save you some serious $$$ - I think it's a little over $100 on Amazon. Before you do anything with the new module make sure you upgrade to the latest firmware. The latest upgrades address some compatibility bugs between it and the 20s as well as adding some new features. You also get some of the features the 20s has that the 1st gen unit doesn't. I have all three versions - 1st and 2nd gen SMH10 and one 20s. Rarely use the 1st gen unit - it's on a spare helmet.
