Could someone please define: #14 Intercom Pairing, #15 2-Way and Multi-way Intercom
The manual does a pretty good job of telling how to set up Intercom Pairing\y (#14 on page 30) and Two-way / Multi-way Intercom (# 15 on pages 31 - 35). But I cannot find any definitions of the three Intercom pairings, when I would want to use one over the other? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? Intercom Pairing on page 30 states that one Sena 20S can connect to NINE other headsets. Great. Why, then, do I need Two-way and Multi-way pairing. It might be right in front of me in the manual, but I haven't seen it yet. I guess we're just supposed to know . . . but I don't.
The manual also refers to the Sena App for group pairing. How does Group Pairing compare and contrast to the other forms of Intercom Pairing? When is that desired? When is it NOT desired over the others. What are the benefits and drawbacks? What about if the person that establishes the group runs out of battery . . . does that mean that the entire group cannot communicate?
Sena, is there a document somewhere that really explains the different usages and the benefits and drawbacks of each?

Anybody?
Does anyone know a definitive explanation of the reasons, pros, and cons of the three ways of Sena 20S Intercom pairing?

Section 14, Intercom Pairing, just describes how to pair the 20S to other headsets for an intercom conversation. So here is a brief explanation of the different intercom pairings configurations described in the User's Guide.
Two-way Intercom:
This is having an intercom conversation between two headsets. As stated in the User's Guide, the 20S can be paired up to 9 other headsets but you can only connect with 1 of those 9 headsets and have an intercom conversation at one time. Connecting to each of those 9 other headsets is determined by the order in which they were paired your 20S. "The intercom pairing queue is ‘Last-Come, First-Served’. If a headset has multiple paired headsets for intercom conversations, the last paired headset is set as first intercom friend. The previous intercom friend becomes second intercom friend, and third intercom friend." This means that the first intercom friend = 1 tap of the Jog Dial. The second intercom friend = 2 taps of the Jog Dial. To start intercom with the third intercom friend and above, = 3 taps of the Jog Dial to enter into friend selection mode. Rotate the Jog Dial to select a friend and tap once more to initiate the intercom connection with that friend. You can also use the voice command "Intercom (1,2,3,etc.) to connect to a specific intercom friend.
Pros: You can be paired to up to 9 headsets.
Cons: You can only speak to 1 of those 9 headsets individually for a two-way intercom conversation.
Multi-way Intercom:
This is having an intercom conversation among a group of up to 8 riders. Multi-way Intercom allows you to connect headsets together in a chain so that you can all talk at the same time. Each headset is paired to a maximum of 2 other headsets because they only need to connect to their respective link in the chain. Once each headsets are paired together in the sequence that they need to be in then they all need to be connected together by tapping each Jog Dial a specific number of times so that they connect together in the chain.
Pros: Can have a group intercom conversation between 3-8 headsets.
Cons: May be difficult to grasp the concept of how to pair each of the headsets in a specific order and connecting them together with the required number of taps on each of the the Jog Dials. If a headset ("link") in the chain gets disconnected for any reason then it will break up the entire group intercom into separate groups.
Group Intercom:
Group Intercom is the same as Multi-way Intercom but is managed by the Sena Smartphone App and does not need any of the headsets paired together and does not require tapping the Jog Dial on any of the headsets. Here is a "How To" video for setting up a Group Intercom using the Smartphone App - http://youtu.be/C6RtBsVN2ik and how the Group Intercom works http://youtu.be/QWQXexAJj6Q
Pros: Easy to manage and connect intercom groups together using the Smartphone App.
Cons: Similar to Multi-way Intercom, if one of the headsets gets disconnected then it will break up the group into separate groups.
However, the person that started the Group Intercom can connect the groups together by disconnecting the group intercom and re-initiating the group intercom using any of the 3 methods for starting a Group Intercom conversation.
Ken, to answer your question about if the person that established the Group Intercom has the battery on their headset then that person will be disconnected from the group intercom but everyone else will still be connected to each other and are still able to have a group conversation.

Fantastic! I do believe you've answered every one of the questions I asked. I do believe that I understand the differences. Nice job. This needs to be in the manual or boldly referenced in documentation. It's probably the most confusing facet of 20S ownership and operation.
The two-way Intercom explanation gives rise to one more question:
Can users be included in a group conversation and also have individual 2-way conversations with another in the group (by selecting their number with the jog dial)?
In other words, consider this hypothetical: If I am included in a group of 7 others in a multi-way intercom conversation and also paired to one or more of the others as intercom friends. Can I select one of those intercom friends for a private conversation while the group continues to have intercom communication minus the two of us?
If so, how would that be done.
The reason for all these question is that last year, four of us with brand new Sena 20s units went on an 11 day trip on July 4th. The intercom operation totally frustrated us. Looking back, I'm pretty sure that part of our frustration was caused by the learning curve of intercom usage. I'm sure we weren't always paired correctly. The four of us are going again in late June. We really want to have totally conquered the learning curve for a much more enjoyable 20S experience.

Ken, yes you can. Both of you would need to disconnect yourselves from the group intercom. However, if you do that then you will break up the connection between everyone else as they are all connected together in a chain and they will not be able to talk all together. You will need to have everyone reconnect to each other when everyone wants to continue talking all together.
