It wouldn't update over USB-3 must use USB-2

  I had issues with updating firmware as well. Tried multiple cables, but in the end I had it going. As you connect and it doesn't recognise the device, press and hold the power button through the whole updating process. That worked for me on my SMH5. Hope it works on more models.
