Galaxy S4 and SMH5-FM  Big Problem  Voice Commands !

I have a LG855 with an Android OS. Voice prompts with the Sena SMH10 are completely useless.  I contacted Sena about this issue and of course they blamed it on the phones firmware.

I informed Sena that the phone understood all voice prompts out of the box and needed no so-called training session.  It also worked flawlessly with the Bluetooth in my vehicle, right out of the box. The problem is the SMH10, not the phone.

Example: When I ask the Sena to call home, it calls 911. Not good when your on the road on a bike. This occurs whether I am stopped at a light, moving slowly, or at speed.  It cannot get any of my voice prompts right.

When I am in the car using Bluetooth or using the phone on its own, it recognizes all commands without issue.

If I remember correctly, one or two firmware versions ago, it did work, but I am not going backwards for this issue and loosing other functionality.

    Hi Otrp1,

when you say "Voice prompts with the Sena SMH10 are completely useless" .... what do you mean?  Mine doesn't even recognise the microphone for the voice comms function.  Oh and I've now tried several different custom ROMs on my S3 so I doubt very much it's an Android problem (to back up what you have said).

Very, VERY disappointed in this premium product.

EXACTLY the same as me, so it's not phone specific then.

    BUT THAT "CABBAGE" RESPONSE?

If Sena has a problem on a product ... Sena must respond directly .. Maybe next time Sena asks to look for answers on the site of Cardo System or Midland?

I used Sena SMH5 fm without voice commands!!

The goal of SENA which is it? be a main brand or a generic competitor type Chinese?

    REALLY DISAPPOINTED

Did you get this resolved?  I had this same issue and the problem was with the pins that connect to the unit - they had been mangled and the mic no longer worked.

Nope.  I have also discovered that if you have a PIN lock on the screen that this will also stop it so, gave up at that point as my phones will always have a PIN lock.  (No mangled pins by the way)

Works for me on my S3, although, I do have intermittent, but NASTY, problems with voice command with any bluetooth earpiece I try - not just the Sena. Sometimes nothing will make it work again except pulling the battery from my phone for a few seconds and then booting it back up. Android has a long way to go before it's as reliable as iPhone in this regard. The PIN lock thing is an annoying security "feature" of android as well. This isn't the Sena's fault.

I also have an S4 with Android 4.2.2 and just got the SMH10.  I can not use the voice dialing either.  Simply does not work.  If anyone knows how to get this working, I would love to know.  It works on the phone itself fine and in my car through bluetooth, so to me, it has to be an issue with the SMH10.

I just "upgraded" to a Samsung Galaxy S5 and it doesn't to 10% of what my cheap Nokia Lumia did with my SMH5. Good luck on getting the "wake up" command to work. Very disappointing.

I have a Galaxy Ace 3 with Android 4.2.2 and have the same issue. Google Voice Search doesn't seem to detect any voice input via Sena SMH10, but interestingly if I use the Samsung S Voice application it does work except the recognition is hopeless - but that is most likely an issue with S Voice (or perhaps it's inability to understand a Kiwi accent :-P ).

So on the face of it it would seem that the issue is with the Google Voice Search application rather than the Sena headset. Having said that though, I know that Google Voice Search does work with other bluetooth headsets, so I would think it would be in Sena's interests to engage with Google to understand what is going wrong... Perhaps the Sena device is not understanding a command from Google Voice Search, or vice versa, that could be fixed in a future firmware upgrade?

Has anyone out there had any success getting their Sena device working with Google Voice Search, and if so, what phone model and version of Android are you using?

    Xperia Neo

    Galaxy S4

    Galaxy S5 ....

    same problem

The voice commands do not work

In fairness should indicate on the site of SENA, our product does not support the voice system ANDROID

I had the no voice prompts problem with my brand new Galaxy S5 and SMH5. Verizon said it probably might be S Voice (which is terrible) and Google Voice conflicting. Since I just got the phone I returned it and got an iPhone 5s. Voice prompts work flawlessly.

Sorry I never replied once I figured this out before.  I have the Galaxy S4 and have kitkat (4.4.2).  Everything works fine and here is how you do it:

    1. Connect your phone to the device.

    2. with your phone screen on, press the phone button on the bluetooth headset.

    3. On the screen, you will be prompted with a few options.  I selected google voice since I found that works better on my device.  and make sure you select the option to make it the default or this won't work.

Once you do this, then everything works fine.  The issue (unlike iphone) is that with Android we have options.  When you press the phone button, your phone needs to know what to do.  Once you set the default, all of these problems go away.  I figured this out very quickly a while ago and everything has been working perfectly on my SMH10 for a while now.  Of course, you are limited to what google voice can understand.  But certainly the most important option here is just to make a phone call, which google voice can do very easily.

    Good luck.  Enjoy.

Thanks Ken. That's the exact same process that I had already tried on Android 4.2.2 and it didn't work for me. I also tried disabling the S Voice application but that didn't help.

So perhaps the situation is that it doesn't work on Jellybean, and it does work on Kitkat?

If this is the case, Sena can you please give this some attention considering the number of Android devices that aren't on the latest OS - see https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html?utm_source=ausdroid.net for up to date stats.

In the mean time I'll only be phoning my 3 friends via speed-dials. (When I find 2 more friends, that is.)

    Thanks,

    Nick.

in reference to Mr. Ken Dickey, precisely the point where he says, phone is on ...

Too bad that after a while the phone's display turns off and the voice function no longer works

Still that does not stop us with your motorcycle, you pull out your phone and reactivate the screen of your phone ..

Too bad that with this practice, I make the call directly without support of Sena SMH5

Difficult Sena not buy a Galaxy S4 or S5 and try to verify it works, simulating use in motorcycles, where you can not turn on or turn off the phone screen ....
or Sena makes his test thinking that we use the headset on the helmet sitting around a table at the bar and not on a motorcycle?

    ciao

Same problem here. I'm running an S3 with Android 4.4.2 with an SMH10 and it's just not pickup any voice input when using Google Voice or the built in voice dialer. Hands free calling works just fine, I can't get my head around the fact that voice commands do not work! This is one of the things I got the Sena for. I'm fairly sure this is a problem with the Sena, not the phone.

Running 5.2 on a Nexus 5 everything worked just as Ken said.  It was frustrating up till the point that I actually looked at the phone.

If you're having trouble getting past the screen lock point (and you have 5.0+) you might consider marking the Sena as a "trusted device" under the security settings.  That way your PIN would be ineffective only when connected to the Sena and automatically re-enables when you disconnect.

So I'm new to the sena world and I had the same issue as everybody else. I own the 10s model and at first I owned a windows phone and every feature worked perfectly but I decided to finally switch to a new phone and got a galaxy s7 active and found out I was going through the same issues.

The only thing that worked was playing music from pause. Could start, stop, forward and rewind and that's it lol. and fm worked but that's not through the phone. No texting or making phone calls. Anyway lol, I had the phone too long to return it and really like the phone so I starting looking up ways to fix it and found this and what "Ken Dickey" said on June 10, 2014, 1:52 PM was actually helpful. I looked into what my phone was using for voice communication and it was the S Voice mode. I figured out how to restore it in settings to the main voice search to google voice and now it works perfectly fine.

The S voice didn't even recognize and commands I gave, kept saying cannot find. With the google voice it automatically picked up what I asked. Don't know if anyone is still having this issue since its been so long since someone replied to this but figured since I had the problem someone else will and hopefully this will help out too.

Just to say that with a LG phone (Android 6, Google voice), it works perfectly. Can receive and make calls from the headset.
