    I had the same problem.

I was updating the firmaware to the latest version when I think I didn't press the buttons on the module correctly.  After this it wouldn't power up.  I tried all the tricks but to no avail.  I also tried to check/update the firmware but the software wouldn't recognise it.  Module dead even though it was fully charged.

    The end solution:

I am using windows XP (32bit), but with the latest version of the Sena software.  It transpires the solution to the problem is to use an earlier version of the Sena software e.g V1.4.1 when using 32bit XP windows.  This earlier version enabled me to reininstall the latest version of the firmware (which appreared to have been corrupted/lost on the earlier upload) and the module now works ok again.

I had the same problem after an attempt to update to the latest firmware.  Then tried to go back to the earlier firmware and the Sena software (v2.0.1) would not recognise my module.  It would seem that the firmware on my module had been wiped out and not updated, hence it would not power up and seemed to have a flat internal battery but when charged it still would not power up.

The problem was I was using windows XP (32 bit) operating system with the latest version of the Sena software (v2.0.1).  Changed the Sena software back to v1.4.1 and my module was then recognised.  Updated it with the latest firmware and it now works fine.

Issue just use the older Sena Software when using windows XP.

This exercise was completely useless.  This does NOT solve my problem at all.

Newly purchased SMH10R.  Registered the produce successfully, proceeded to the software update process.  Got to the part where I was instructed to hold the center button until the msg disappeared.  Held the button for about 5 minutes, msg did not disappear, and computer just spun.  I let go of the center button and proceeded to reattempt the process.  Now the device is not recognized, nor can I power up the device.  What gives????

I had exactly the same as Shizoku.

It won't power on now.  I should have ignored the "UPGRADE NOW!" card that came in the box :(

OK, follow up to my post above.

A couple things, I went to the online Manual and downloaded it.  Seems either my eyesight is so bad that I can't read the small print in the booklet included in the product box or there is more detail in the online Manual.  Anyway, in the online Manual I found the headset reset via paper clip instructions.  Use a small paper clip to push the little reset button below the "+" button.  Once I did this, I reattempted the download and SUCCESS!

Additionally, I purchased the dual pack, and during the install on my wife's helmet, I bent and broke off the pin in the battery pack connector.  One call to the Tech guys and 3 days later I had a free replacement and a charger adapter pin (free) in my mail box!  One call, no verification of who I was, purchase receipt, nothing!  Just wanted my name and address...BOOM!  Sena Rocks!!!!

I had same problem with SMH10B. I didn't find it in the manual, but there is a reset button in the back near the don't recycle icon on the label (trash can with X on it). It is very deep in there, but it fixed mine. Was about to return because wouldn't power on at all. Now working normally without the hassle of a return :)

I had the same issues as Shizoku with my second MH5 "upgrade". Shouldn't a new product be useable without having to upload information to it? I tried the paperclip reset without any luck. I sent a request for help yesterday and I am still waiting for a reply. I guess they want you to stumble around until you get it fixed on your own. Oh well, kind of sours our planned trip with bluetooth capabilities today.

You actually don't need to upgrade/update your SMH5. Out of the box it is ready to use.  I only update my headsets when my riding season is over in case something like this happens.

I have a problem with SMH10R that it will work off of the power cord (AC adaptor or USB) but not battery.  When it powers up it says battery is good so it recognizes the battery and it is charged.  I even purchased a new battery. But it will not power up or stay powered on battery, just AC.  I tried all resets and upgrades to no avail. Any ideas kerryorr@aol.com

I bought a brand new Sena 10R just a couple of days ago. Attempted the firmware update, followed the directions to the letter. Failed at around 8% and now the unit will not turn on. Customer service number after a long wait you get a message saying that they're unable to take your call at this time.

Pretty annoyed, the lack of support is astonishing.

@Harry Hansen: Try plugging the SMH10R, with the battery connected, into your computer and restart the Sena Device Manager. When you get to the Device Recognition section, use a paperclip to press on the reset button that is underneath the circular indentation near the Plus button. Then power on the SMH10R by pressing the Center button and Plus button at the same time. If the SMH10R doesn't power on completely then that is ok.  Press "Next" on the Device Recognition screen and you should be able to update the firmware normally.

I had the same problem. My solution was to close the Sena manager, start it again, connecting the SMH10R and pushing the reset button for a few seconds, without powering on it started the download successful. I had to trie this a couple of times. happy again, but not easy. did need this forum thanks for the posts.

I have found that if I ever turn the SH10 off then I have to use the paper clip to do a fault reset to get it to come back on.  I have reinstalled the firmware several times.  I have a pair of these that are supposed to be identical, but obviously not.  I do have an email request into support but have not heard anything yet.  Should be interesting.  I'm quite sure I'm just out of warranty.  Of course.

Having the same issue. SMH10. Started the update process then stopped with an error. Tried to recover but it won't recognize the unit. If I plug it to the USB led goes red indicating is charging, but won't turn on, neither connected to the USB or disconnected. HELP!!!

    Same issue here with SMH5-FM.

Something have gone wrong with firmware upgrade and now the device won't turn on...

Is there a kind of "emergency procedure" to recover this problem?

My SMH10R won't power on.  I plugged it into the USB port and charges until the light is blue.  But disconnect it and it won't power up.  Tried connecting it to the Sena Device manager, but that won't recognize the device (probably because the device won't power on).

Tried the factory reset button while it was plugged in via USB and nothing happens.  Basically dead in the water.

SMH10 wouldn't turn on, I had 2 of them, I got one of them working using Pim Plas' response:

"I had the same problem. I pretty much did the same thing, just quit the manager. reopened bluetooth manager, and did everything as normal (even though it would not turn on) then I clicked device recognition and pressed the reset button (pinhole on back) and it connected. Clearly there was something buggy, because it said I was running version 0.0. Instead of updating, I did a firmware restore right away to 5.0, then I updated to 5.0.1, then 5.1.1. Now it is working normally.

Haven't had the same luck with my second one.

I just sent back my 2nd SMH10R to SENA.. same problem with both units. I finally got the second unit to work after 30 min with their help center.  Fully charged - went on a nice ride, about 30 min into the ride, listening to my iPhone music and one incoming phone call; unit just "stopped".... would not turn back on! Man was I pissed off.  After riding back to hotel I tried doing all the things they tell us to do... reset button push for a few sec, etc, etc. I will tell you this; when the unit is working, it works great.  I can hear my music in a 3/4 Helmet found and clear at 90 mph and the one phone call that came in sounded great and he said he could hear me fine.  I just wish and hope their products would just work as advertised... When I read this forum it appears this is a well known product problem, why have they not fixed it yet!

Same issue. The unit doesn't start up. I can charge it and it shows both charge lights. Tried the reset hole and I even managed to get through the cruddy device manager software (on mac) using a USB 2.0 cable and pressing the "-" button several times during instal - it all worked so far as to install the new firmware (5.1) on there. But it still doesn't start up.

Another dead SMH10R here. I have a twin system and the other one is still working fine. Frustrating. I bought these because I thought they were reliable and rain proof.

Yet another DEAD SMH10R. Starting to wish I found this forum before making the purchase. Used last about a week ago on a ride from Sheffield to London and seemed fine. I left it  overnight and fully charged this morning had the blue light but it would not start this morning. Arrrrgh! I am using Windows 7 32-bit, with latest SENA firmware for it. SENA Device manager would not recognize it, cant reset it, wont power up...

Found this thread on Google as I was looking up the issue I was experiencing.

--Last used the unit last week and I'm fairly certain I turned it off before putting it away.

----Thought it was dead, charged it, light was blue. Wouldn't turn on.

--------found the reset button right below the + sign on mine.

Held the reset button with a paper clip and tried to turn it on.

------It worked. Turned it on 5 or 6 times again after that and connected it to my phone each time.

For those that find this, try the reset button with a paper clip while trying to turn it on at the same time.

Have two SMH10R intercom units. When purchased they were both fine. Have only used them approx. 12 times. Now only one will turn on. Have not tried to do an update and the unit seems to charge up ok but no go. Have contacted Sena help desk but getting the run around because my brother purchased the system in Australia.(I am in NZ). They keep saying I need to contact the dealer but I only had an email address and there is no response. plus my brother has since died so can't get him to try to contact the original dealer either. Not getting much help from Sena which is a buga. I thought that purchasing a Sena product I would get good service if I needed it.

I have a SMH10 Dual intercom system. One of the units turns on fine while the other starts up only occasionally. Have tried charging and also resetting the units. I haven't upgraded the software so that shouldn't be an issue and one of them works fine anyway. On the few times they both start up the system works fine. Have tried to contact Sena with absolutely no genuine attempt to rectify the problem. Not happy with the Sena "help" desk

I was having the same problems. Reset button didn't do squat, would only work with usb, yada, yada. Here's what I did.

    1. With the usb power in and powered on, hold the middle button to get to the Configuration Menu. Then press the + button until you hear "Factory Reset." Then hit the middle button.

    2. That should reset it. But it still didn't work for me.

    3. I switched the mic port with the battery port and now it works.

What a pathetic excuse for computer software the sema configuration management tool is. Windows and Mac version is absolutely terrible.

All this talk about updating the system is bull sh#t. You shouldn't have to update anything. Both of my units worked fine initially and I have not "updated" my units but one of them will not start up anyway so now I can't even think about "updating" them. Apart from that it seems it doesn't matter anyway as it is obvious that these units and the Sena support "HELP DESK" is bloody useless. All I managed to get from Sena was sorry your units are out of warranty. They then suggested that I purchase another battery. They have not even tried to put me on to a New Zealand agent who may be able to assist. Sena obviously do not value their product or customers at all and I am reluctant to purchase another battery upon reading other comments as above. It could be an absolute waste of money. Even if a new battery does work, how long before it packs up again? NOT IMPRESSED  I will not recommend anyone to purchase any Sena products.
