Feature Request: Seamless Mesh 3.0 ↔ Wave Switching for Sena Intercom
Dear Sena Team,
Yesterday our motorcycle group tested the Sena Wave app during a ride with five riders. Unfortunately the experience was not very reliable for us — some riders were very quiet, others had choppy audio. After only a few minutes we stopped and switched back to Mesh 3.0.
So for now, Wave unfortunately did not work well enough for our group riding scenario.
However, while testing we came up with an idea that could potentially take Wave to the next level:
A smart switching system between Mesh 3.0 and Wave (mobile network).
### Idea: Mesh Preferred Mode
Add a switch in the Wave app that allows users to prioritize communication mode.
Option 1 — Mesh Preferred (Automatic Fallback to Wave)
1. When riders are close enough → communication automatically uses Mesh 3.0.
2. If one rider falls out of Mesh range → their device automatically switches to Wave (mobile network).
3. When the rider comes back into Mesh range → the system automatically switches back to Mesh.
This would allow riders to:
- Start riding from home and already communicate via Wave
- Give status updates (ETA, delays, meeting point updates)
- Once everyone is together, automatically switch to high-quality Mesh communication
So Wave becomes the long-range bridge, while Mesh remains the primary communication method when riders are together.
### Option 2 — Mesh Group + Wave Bridge for Out-of-Range Rider
Another possible approach:
- Riders within range stay connected via Mesh
- Only the rider who drops out uses Wave
- That rider can send Push-to-Talk voice messages to the Mesh group via the app or better - via the Mesh button on the sena itself.
Example use case:
> “Hey, I’m stuck at a red light. Wait for me.”
The Mesh group would briefly pause and play the message from the Wave user.
### Why this would be powerful
Combining Mesh + Wave could make Sena the most flexible communication system for group riding:
- Long-distance connectivity when riders are spread out
- High-quality Mesh audio when riders are close together
- Seamless transition between both worlds
It would also remain compatible with the existing ecosystem, since the app already knows which device is connected and could detect whether a Sena Mesh device is available.
I believe this hybrid approach could significantly increase adoption of Wave among existing Sena Mesh users.
Thank you for your great products and for considering this idea.
Best regards
