The deleting bluetooth pairing does not get rid of previous phone connection. How to I make it work?

I go through the process 9.5 in the SMH10 manual, which seems to work (it says all pairings deleted).  But when I try to pair a new phone, it does to pairing an intercom.  It is my impression that intercom is second to phone, so I assume the phone is still paired?

  You need to hold the "small button" on the SMH10 for 5 seconds until the LED is flashing red and blue - and it will say "phone pairing".
