In reference to the same problem as the above "attach a lanyard to the main unit". I think that guys got the right  idea. Or perhaps a physical locking mechanism that would make it not so easy to ham fist, and disconnect the main unit from the base plate when operating with gloves on while underway. Some of us ride dirt and an encounter with a tree limb or brush could easily land this thing in the drink.
