Boom Mic Lanyard
Greetings All -
I have an SPH-10 that I use frequently for skiing, rock climbing, biking, etc. However, I've noticed the boom mic - while fully seated - can be easily unplugged and lost! This is especially the case if you're wearing gloves and a helmet and accidently tug at the mic while adjusting it. This happened recently while skiing (on the chair lift) and the mic was lost! The SPH10 was less than 2 months old. If, (like me) you use the SPH10 for communicating with members of your group – this can be a big issue!
This got me thinking about a way to secure the mic to the headset so in the event it came loose - it wouldn't be lost. My solution?
- I attached a small piece of filament line to the headset (the curved bar just in front of the left ear pad).
- Then, I ran the line down the inside face of the earpad (there is a small channel between where the earpad mates with the frame - look for two Hex screws stacked vertically).
- I unplugged the boom mic and passed a 1&1/2" section of black Heat Shrink tube over the boom.
- Next, I tied the filament line to the boom mic with enough slack so that the heat shrink tube could slip back over the filament and lay flat when heated / shrunk.
- Finally, using a heat gun (ON LOW SETTING! lol), I shrunk the tube which concealed the line, the knot and blended-in with the already black boom mic - nearly perfect. I've attached pics for review.
If, when attaching the filament to the earpad, you do so with a loop, you can pass the mic back through the loop to remove it whenever needed. The best part? No more lost mics!
Hope this is of some use. Best of luck!
~G.
