Firmware Download not possible! [solved, see below]

The Device Manager recognizes my 50S, but then fails with:
"Cannot conenct to the server"

The Device Manager would support adding a local file, but since I cannot find a download site for the firmware, that also is not option!

how can I update the firmware? or where can I download it? 
(no, it's  not a windows problem - tried with 10 and 11, pro and enterprise versions - or a network/dns issue - tried via cable and mobile, different providers -> always the same error)

  Having the exact same issue.  Mine is on Mac with a 5R

  Device Manager got an update today: Version 4.4.8 to 4.4.9

  With the new device manager the download and firmware upgrade worked flawlessly!

  4.4.9 has the same error now.
