Transitioning from wired to wireless
I bought a 20S Evo for my 3/4 open face Shoei RJ helmet. I think I installed the speakers correctly as I used the thick pads and the foam cover just touches my ear.
The problem is that I can barely hear the sound at speed and when I turn the volume WAY up it's tin-like and scratchy.
First, I came from a wired J&M premium series headset and perhaps my expectations for a wireless set are just set too high?
If not, would it have been worth the money to have purchased the 50S premium system instead? I mean - is there that much difference?
My other possibility is to wire my J&M speakers to a regular jack and use the headphone/earbud jack on the mounting kit.
Does anyone have a solution?

A couple of things. Make sure the center of the speaker is aligned with your ear canal. You may have to reach in with a finger to feel around when your helmet is on. If it is offset just a bit the volume will be reduced so readjust the speaker mounting to fix. If you are using the phone to listen to music, make sure the phone volume is all the way up. Another option that would be to ditch the speakers and use earbuds plugged into the accessory jack of the sena.

Did your 20s come with HD speakers? If so turn on the HD speaker accessory under basic settings in the Sena Utility App and adjust audio equalizer listed below the HD speaker accessory. That may help. If you don't have the HD speakers then select audio boost in the basic settings.

Great minds think alike, Ken. When I got the 20S I used the Full-Face setup on another helmet (and then never used it) so I ended up buying the Mounting kit which I assume, for $68usd, doesn't come with the HD speakers. I guess my original question was self-answered. "Why do 28mm speakers powered from a Bluetooth adapter not have as much power as 40mm J&M Speakers powered by an 125w sound system?" duh!
What I did do, just like you suggested, was buy a pair of very basic PlugFones (cheap ones just to test the concept) and connected them to the mounting kit jack and as long as I properly seat the ear buds my sound issues are gone! Given the endless possibilities for ear buds - custom molded, etc. I'm sure I can make it "just right"
That said I'm tempted to buy the HD speakers and try them, too. As costly as all this experimenting can be, it's a one time investment that pays off for a very long time. I'll learn all there is.
Now today I;m driving down the road at speeds that the local cops would have never approved of and the sound is great ... but then when I say "hey sena" into the mic ... no replay. Multiple times ... no response. Yet when I sit in my living room with my helmet on (and btw there is NO WAY you can do that without looking like a huge dork) "Hey Sena" works just fine.
Each time I power up, the Sena announces that it has connected to my phone. Then I press the center button on the RC3 and it announces Remote Connected. But then each time I power up the Freewire (Harley Sound System/CB radio adapter) I have ti pair it again.
But I'm sure I'll learn my way through all that stuff.
Let me ask you this: What do you think of the 45mm Cardo JBL speakers? They use that same accessory jack https://www.cyclegear.com/accessories/cardo-45mm-jbl-audio-speaker-set?gclid=CjwKCAjwwL6aBhBlEiwADycBIKnkDJQ-PoqL7cQJHPpN_YaMeSwy3aQnFDPwTibjqwZMO7s_RkoTmBoCbUUQAvD_BwE&sku_id=1653046

No experience with Cardo JBL speakers or using RC 3. I did buy the Sena HD speakers when they became available for the 20s evo and found them to work much better than the standard speakers plus they plug directly into the unit, leaving the accessory jack free if you wanted to do earbuds. I wear soft earplugs and have a 3/4 helmet and at highway speeds the volume and sound quality is still very good. You need to update firmware if you haven't done so already so that the HD option and equalizer is available in the App. For $40 it's worth a shot in my opinion. Good luck with your experimenting!
