If in fact both units are paired, then a single tap of the jog dial will both connect and disconnect the intercom session. This pairing should remain remain even if both units are turned off.

You may have to hold it a bit longer. 12 sec is approximate. You should hear the prompt. I would also check to see that your volume is up all the way.
