How to differentiate between new and old SMH10's

I've been offered an SMH10 from a friend but from what I am reading there are two versions of the SMh10 and apparently the older version can't have its firmware updated? Can anyone tell me what to look at to determine if the model is the older or newer version and if it can be upgraded?

Also looking for confirmation that the My Sena app is not compatible with the SMH10, but is with the SMH10R? I've read that apart from the physical appearance the "guts" are virtually the same, but if that is the case, wouldn't they receive the same upgrade support?

If someone can offer some insight into these two things it would be greatly appreciated.
