Hi Nick,
Thank you for contating SENA Customer support.
With regard to your question. Does the smh5 send sound to the "phone" all the time or only after tapping the jog dial?
To answer your question, the SMH5 does not send sound to the phone, the the SMH5 is an output unit. Meaning the "Phone is the one that sends the signal and play it on the SMH5.
By tapping the jog dial of your SMH5 - it will only activate intercom pairing - it will look for another SENA headset and will try to reconnect.
I hope I have answered your question, if you need more clarrification or have other concern, please do not hesitate to reply to my email.
Take care and stay safe.
Best regards,

Is he really saying that an SMH5 can only be used to listen to a cell phone call but cannot support talking back? Why does the manual give instructions for placing a cell phone call if the unit cannot do this?
I'm trying to connect my SMH5 to a Rexon aviation VHF radio. I know some Sena headsets will do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nick - to answer your question the headset will make phone calls when paired to a mobile phone. This is separate from intercom pairing. As far as pairing to a two way radio that has bluetooth built in you need to ascertain from the manufacturer if the bluetooth connection uses HFP (hands free profile) to make the connection. If so, the headset should pair with the radio. You would pair the radio like you would with a mobile phone. (It is not an intercom pairing) You should be able to talk through headset to the radio using the radio's PTT. Again, the radio manufacturer should be able to advise you on how to place the radio in pairing mode so that the headset will recognize it. I have personally paired a headset to a Motorola two-way radio that has bluetooth built in. Hope this helps.
